“Hope is the thing with feathers” starts the poem Frannie is reading in school. Frannie hasn’t thought much about hope. There are so many other things to think about. Each day, her friend Samantha seems a bit more “holy.” There is a new boy in class everyone is calling the Jesus Boy. “Pah!” Said the peacock, “I will fly even higher.” He lifted his wings – but they were heavy and weighed down with decorative feathers. Yes, he looked wonderful, but the sly goddess had made him pay a price for his beauty – he could not longer fly. “Hmmm,” I thought, as I looked down. “That peacock is all show.”.

Feathers keep birds warm and dry, streamline the body, provide color and ornamentation, allow birds to fly, and more. Two of the key properties of feathers are very light weight and incredible. Use pheasant tail feathers for making wing cases, legs, and tails on both nymphs and dry flies. Slips clipped from wing quill feathers, which have more patterning than duck or goose quills, work as wing cases and upright dry fly wings. Body feathers make colorful soft-hackles, legs, nymph tails, wing cases, and streamer cheeks.

Collecting feathers from my chickens’ moult. The feather consists of a single stem, known as the portion of the rachis that is in and just above the skin is known as the calamus or quill.. Extending outwards from the rachis is the feather vane consists of interlocked barbs.. The barbs are further divided into barbules and eventually hamuli or hooklets. What's the significance of the book being split into four parts? Why doesn't the novel ever reveal Jesus Boy's actual name? How is the Emily Dickinson poem in the epigraph crucial to the story? What do you think the other side of the highway is like? Do you think it's all that different or better?
